Passenger Attempts To Start A Fire On GOL Flight

Earlier today, a passenger got detained after locking himself in a bathroom and tried to set fire to papers mid-flight. The flight was operated on a recently ungrounded Boeing 737 MAX 8 with registration PR-XME and was travelling from Minas Gerais to Sao Paulo. In the middle of the flight, a smoke-like smell was present in the air around the bathroom. A cabin crew member and a passenger then broke into the bathroom and detained the man who burnt the papers. The reason why the passenger burned the papers and risked everyone's lives onboard is still unknown. Thankfully, the airplane landed safely and the man was arrested upon arrival.

This is all due to the safety measures taken by airlines to ensure that their cabin crew are well-trained for any occasion. Here is a statement by GOL Airlines following the incident:

Our crew, trained in non-violent containment techniques, detained the man with the voluntary assistance of a passenger. The airports’ Federal Police and Medical Post arrived at the scene at the request of the flight’s captain. They acted quickly after landing, and there were no disruptions at Guarulhos Airport in Sao Paulo.

Why do you think the man tried to set fire to the airplane?
