You lay down on your airplane seat and watch a movie. All of a sudden, lights start flickering, and emergency lights turned on. You start to panic. You start to think that the plane is crashing. However, moments later, your cabin crew members assure you that nothing was wrong, and the airplane was just suffering a generator failure. That exact thing happened today on a United Airlines flight...
Earlier today, A United Airlines Boeing 787-9 was forced to return back to Houston after a generator failure had taken place around 2 hours after departure. When the aircraft was flying flight UA819 from Houston to Buenos Aires over Guatemala, lights started to turn off and on and emergency lights turned on. The pilots made the right choice by turning back to Houston and turning on the backup generator. The flight landed after flying to "nowhere" 4 hours following departure. The flight landed safely with no injuries and managed to vacate the runway without assistance.
The aircraft involved was N13954, a 6.2-year-old Boeing 787-9 and was delivered to United Airlines in March 2015. The aircraft could fit 252 passengers. Upon landing, passengers were brought to a replacement aircraft to continue their journey to Buenos Aires.
The reason why this incident happened is still unknown and investigations are currently ongoing.
